What I Made Wednesday {Student Pencil Event Reminder}

A trip to Target can literally result in a gush of inspiration. Case in point: today's What I Made Wednesday. I'm "room mom" for my son's homeroom at school and we have a fantastic annual event coming up: The Fall Family Fair! It's a fantastic event that kicks off the Fall season exactly the way it was meant to be. I'm betting your child's school has something similar so I hope you consider this cute and inexpensive little reminder you can give to the students before the event.

So, there I was, at Target for toothpaste and peanuts (not the peanut butter, gosh no!) but I always like to meander through the shopper trap at the front store. You know, that area that you bump into as you walk into the store with dollar items galore! I found these Fall-themed pencils and immediately thought about buying them for the kids in homeroom. There are only 15 kids in my son's class so I only had to purchase 2 pencil packs: a whopping $2!

I used the pencils and this template from Martha Stewart to create the Fall-Themed Event Reminder to get the kids excited for the upcoming festivities and also have something that wasn't a throw-away waste. I'm pretty sure the kids could always use pencils, right?

What You'll Need
Fall-themed pencils
Template from here
Color printer
Scissors or paper cutter
Stapler

What You'll Do
I found this fantastic template at Martha Stewart Weddings. It was perfectly color-themed for Fall. Go to the site and follow the link to make the favor tags. Once there, download the editable PDF file. Instead of typing a guest's name, I typed "See You at the Fall Family Fest!" So simple, right?

I printed the number of tags I needed on my color printer and cut the skinny tags with a paper cutter (best craft tool investment I've ever made, not including my glue gun and X-acto knife, of course).

Print.

Cut.
Staple.
Take each cut-out tag, fold in half and snuggly wrap around the pencil close to the eraser, around the metal part. The ridges on the metal part help keep the tags from falling down.

What You'll Need to Know to Finish
Again, the tags should wrap tightly around the metal part of the pencil near the eraser to avoid the tags from slipping down the pencil. The kids will get their pencil reminder this Friday morning to get them psyched about the weekend's Fall Fest activities! Think of all the ways you could use this little craft: a guest favor at your next Fall get-together, a place setting at your next Autumn luncheon. So many possibilities!
Happy Fall, y'all!
