Going Local: Beckwith Orchards Cider Mill and Gift Shop

There was a time I used to be my family's entertainment director. Blame it on burn-out, blame it on getting old, I've since retired the position as of late and Super Hubby has picked up the load. Super Hubby did not disappoint with his latest family adventure: Beckwith Orchards Cider Mill and Gift Shop in Kent, Ohio. Not our usual stomping ground for autumnal activities, but our old go-to place, Pattersons, got to be so over-crowded. I guess word got out that Fall wasn't Fall without a visit to Pattersons and so people have been coming in droves. Well, for families with older children who are looking for a more casual, less congested, relaxing afternoon gathering gourds and apples, Super Hubby found a goldmine!

Small but quaint describes this 125-year old family farm. We arrived to the bellowing sound of an Irish folk-band playing on the porch. Right away, the banjo-picked notes told me this experience was going to be different. Our son scouted the premises near the old, red barn and laid claim to a robustly plump, orange gourd that was destined to guard our front porch for the next 15 days.

Scrumptious smells from the food truck tempted us to change our lunch plans, but we resisted. I promise you, the next time we are there, I'm making a bee-line for the food truck! When we entered the house-turned-store, there were even more aromatic greetings. The welcoming committee included warm greetings from homemade cookies, freshly baked pies, and steaming hot or ice cold apple cider. Oh, the apple cider!!!!!! We could not get enough of that sweet nectar. Honestly, the best I've ever tasted!

The gift shop is filled with unusual items that instantly bring warmth to any home. I wanted one of each but remembered my cluttered home and resisted the temptation. But, consumables don't count, so pick yourself some jams, jellies, and spreads to take home and enjoy.
Back from the hunt.
We moseyed to their fruit market and picked up a half peck of Empire apples to make apple crisp (tomorrow's What I Made Wednesday, stay tuned). The pricing was reasonable and the apples did not disappoint.
We left him unattended, but still no kitten.

Behind all of this activity sits a serene farm, set with acres and acres of apple trees all in a row. The rolling hills welcome visitors to walk the grounds and enjoy the sweetness that lingers in the air. If walking isn't your thing, then bring your bike and ride! Beckwith's is located right next to the Portage County Hike and Bike Trail.

So, get out of your comfort zone this season and try a new orchard. You never know when your discovery becomes a brand new family tradition. Beckwith's has certainly earned that title for us.

Going Local: Patterson's Family Fun Fest and a Linky Party with SPARK

An apple a day keeps the blues away.
Is there any other time of year that warms our hearts with sunshine, feeds our bellies with one-pot meals, embraces our souls with over-sized sweaters they can hide so much, overwhelms our eyes with brilliant golds, reds, and oranges, and tingles our ears with the rustling of leaves underfoot during an afternoon hike? Like many of you, Autumn is my favorite season. I love the transition of the world, going from active and vivacious to slumber and rest. It comes at just about the right time where we could welcome a little hibernation.

But before you settle down for your long Winter's nap, don't let Fall pass you by without visiting Patterson's Fruit Farm and experience their Family Fun Fest. If your family is young, this place is so perfect for the littles to run around, sample all kinds of apples, and just have a wonderful afternoon. The Family Fun Fest is located on Mulberry Road (not Caves Road, their other location) but it's good to visit both places in one day. Hay rides, corn mazes, pumpkin pickin'; it's all about Fall and Patterson's really does it right, in a simple way. We've gone just about every year since our son was born, had the apple fritter and apple cider and stocked up on our Honey Crisps (you've got to try one if you've never had one). YUM!

Patterson's over the years.

Going Local: Sweet Moses Soda Fountain & Treat Shop

Imagine a time of soda fountains, ice cream parlors, handmade hard-candy, and old-fashioned root beers straight from the barrel. What I thought was an impossibility to experience in this 21st century I seem to have mistakenly been placed in has entered into my world. The moment you step foot into Sweet Moses you journey back to another time when real ingredients filled sundae cups, not unpronounceable multi-syllable words disguised as food, concocted in a lab surrounded by people in long white coats with embroidered letters "D" and "R" in front of their names. No, there is nothing fake about Sweet Moses; everything is real and authentic from food to fixtures. Have a seat at the Bastion-Blessings soda fountain topped with 16-feet of Tennessee marble. Or pull-up a fully-restored, historic wrought-iron ice cream parlor chair at one of the surrounding tables. The atmosphere is as sweet as the ice cream and goodies served and offers such a treat for the eyes as well as the palette.

Grab a few friends and treat yourselves to The Terminal Tower. It's 10 scoops of ice cream in each classic flavor. Then, it's topped with 5 toppings, almonds, pecans, sprinkles and more. Hey, if you can eat the whole thing by yourself I'm not judging, believe me! They also feature 15 different fountain syrup flavors, to be used with acid phosphate and ice-cold carbonated water. Mix any two to make your own unique phosphate! The hot fudge and caramel sauces are kettle-cooked right in their kitchen. Here's a complete menu, click here.

While you take in the sights and smells, your taste buds get ready for the deliciousness of authenticity. And when you leave, you leave satisfied, happy, and a bit nostalgic for the good ol' days from a time you've never actually lived. But at Sweet Moses, you are back in that time before Facebook, iPhones, and Internet. Ahh, sweet, Sweet Moses; even your sign outside your shop beckons me from afar. See you soon!

Take a look at the menu and tell me what you would order?

Going Local: Stoney Hollow Stables

Isn't Shannon so pretty?
I normally make it a rule to not get involved with animals bigger, stronger, or faster than I am. Animals sense my fear. They know the scent of fresh meat and can't wait to prove how wrong the man-over-beast rule really is in their eyes.

So, when a new, sweet friend of mine suggested we go horseback riding, I hesitated to show my pure fear and opted, instead, for enthusiasm. After all, it's good to try new things and all that jazz, right? My friend is an experienced rider, although she'd never take the claim (too modest). The fact is, I've never ridden a horse and she has so I grant her the title of "experienced".

Another friend came, as well, so the three of us loaded up in the Suburban and headed out to Stoney Hollow Stables in Newbury, Ohio. It was a perfect sunny day and anticipating what I was about to do seemed so DALLAS to me, I wish I had brought my cowboy hat so I could have played the part better. Wait! I don't own one.

We got to the stables and met Amy, the owner of Stoney Hollow Stables. She's so great! Her knowledge of horses is amazing and her knack for teaching and instruction is respected and appreciated. Amy really helps newbies feel at ease. You can immediately see the love she has for her horses and, in some way, you want to share that love for the beast, too.
This girl's riding in style today!
My horses name is Shannon and she is so pretty. We started the lesson, very wisely, getting to know one another (Shannon and me, not Amy). Shannon got pampered by all my grooming activity. Brush after brush, comb after comb, Shannon and I bonded. She was so cooperative, lifting each leg in proper position so I could clean the mud out of her feet. I sprayed conditioner in her hair that smelled like a high-end NY salon brand. Shannon stood patiently and just took it all in. I don't think it's wishful thinking, but I think she really liked me!

After grooming and bonding, I tacked Shannon with an English, not Western, saddle. (Look at me with the lingo!) We got to the arena, with a little more confidence in my heart, and I mounted. Like learning to drive, I got used to controlling left and right, stops and starts, turns and turn-arounds.

I was feeling good, then Amy stepped it up a notch. She seems like the type to challenge the student, darn Amy, good teachers are like that. I'll spare the details for my non-horseback riding readers, but I learned how to post (OK, maybe only for 3 seconds, but still)! If you know what posting is you'd be impressed, trust me. No, posting has nothing to do with Facebook in this case. The lesson ended with no broken limbs.
Something is wrong here; Shannon is a much bigger horse in person, seriously!
This experience was so much fun and I'm so glad my fear didn't win out over the chance to try something new and different. If you're in the area, I hope you consider an Intro lesson at Stoney Hollow Stables. And, the soreness might be a myth because it wasn't too bad the next day - it is exercise, you know!

Amy is offering a great deal for a 2-3 hour Intro lesson like the one I experienced for only $20.

If you get a chance, go "Like" them on Facebook to show your support and see all the beautiful horses!

LEGO Lovers Unite

No, you're not seeing things, two posts in one day is not the norm for me, I know. I had to make an exception for this really great LEGO opportunity I want all of you to know about. After reading this post last week, our local LEGO store at Beachwood Place wanted me to tell you about an awesome event happening this Friday at LEGO stores across the country (Rockefeller Center and Canada stores are NOT participating).

LEGO wants to set a Guinness World Record for most number of people participating in Spinjitzu Battles in one day on Friday, February 17th, hours between store opening and store closing. Grab the kids and head to your local LEGO store and spin a Ninjago Spinner to be counted towards this history-in-the-making!

Want to Do More (and save some bucks)?
If you'd like to be more involved with this event, LEGO will reward quite nicely. The local LEGO store is looking for volunteers to count the number of people spinning the Ninjago spinners throughout the day. You can sign up for 3-hour shifts and earn 30% off your purchase made that day (some restrictions apply). If you stay for 4+ hours, they'll even buy you lunch or dinner! What a deal!!!

If you are interested in volunteering for this event, e-mail Jason at Beachwood@LEGO.com to sign up for an open time slot, or give him a call at 216.375.2060.

If you are interested in being counted towards this Guinness World Record event, show up at your local LEGO store (again, not Rockefeller Center or Canada)  and give a Ninjago spinner a good spin! They provide everything, just show up this Friday. That's it - not hard and way fun!!

If you're looking for today's Gratitude Journal Monday, do not panic, just click here.
Thanks so much and we'll be back to one post a day!

I was not paid to endorse LEGO in any way, I just wanted to let you know about this incredible event!

Going Local: The LEGO Store

If you have kids, then you know the love/hate relationship one may have with the ever-popular, wallet-biting, strewn-about-the-house, colorful little bricks called LEGOs. They hurt when you step on a brick barefooted, the pieces are impossible to organize in any cohesive manner, and the cost of said plastic pieces is as much as a barrel of oil. But, I love the hours my son spends building and creating, all sans any electrical component in hand. This is a very good thing and good things cost, so get over it.

But, what if you could get LEGOs for FREE? Have I got your attention? There is a catch, though. You have to live near a LEGO store. One recently opened at our local mall, Beachwood Place, and we pretty much get paychecks direct-deposited to the LEGO Store there. Soo, a chance to get some bricks for nothing is pretty enticing.

If you're local, or live near a LEGO Store, I want to tell you about their Mini-Build sessions. These are the coolest! Each first Tuesday of each month LEGO Stores conduct a Mini-Build Model session. Your kids get to build that month's model and take it home absolutely FREE (one per child)! Check today's date of this post and you might want to start making your after-school plans, like right now! This month's Mini Build model is a hockey player (pictured above)!

But, you never get something for nothing, right? So, what will this FREE Mini-Build LEGO cost you? TIME! Yes, LEGO has a limited supply of these FREE Mini-Build Kits and you don't want to stand in line for nothing, so get there early. At our local LEGO Store, the Mini-Build sessions have become increasingly popular so I like to get in line at 4:00 for the 5:00 build session. The worst thing would be to stand in line for hours and have them run out of kits right before you're able to get in to the store.

Keep in mind, the store is still open during the Mini-Build session but you have to stand in line to build the Mini-Build kit. They let in about 12 - 18 kids at a time and you are taken to a table with about 5 kids around each table. You're given a tub of pre-sorted bricks and the build instructions are on the table for everyone to look at while building (the instructions are shared). Once completed, your child is given a business card-sized certificate with a picture of the Mini-Build and a place to sign their name and date for posterity.

Depending on the theme, the lines can get very long, very fast. I've never gotten in line before 4:00 and it has always seemed to work out. For those in the area, the last Mini-Build my son participated in was during December where he built the cutest little LEGO Nutcracker ever seen. The line, again for the locals, turned the corner and went past the Victoria's Secret store. Think of that if you go today!

I hope you take advantage of this great little monthly event LEGO hosts because FREE Legos are like hitting the jackpot in my book!

Last-Minute Christmas Gift Idea: Give LOVD

Yes, let's not dwell on the obvious. It's the holiday season and I still don't have my Etsy shop opened. I know, I know, but, sometimes, the burning desire of eagerness has to be cooled by wisdom. Does it make sense to open an Etsy shop and trial run the whole operation during the holidays? If I want to do this right, I'm not going to wing it during the holidays, right? (formula for failure) So, 2012 is the year the LOVD shop will debut in all its glory!

Buutttt, for those of you that are lucky locals, I just wanted to remind you the LOVD glass pendant necklaces are available at Dazzle in Chagrin Falls, click here for all the details. They've got a great selection and, if you would like to change out the rubber necklace for a metal beaded necklace (as shown), just contact me and I'll send you one for free that matches the bail.

I sure hope you take some time this holiday season and delight in the boutique wares of Dazzle in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. It's a treat for all girls, young and "antiqued".

Is your holiday shopping list completely checked off?

Going Local: Chagrin Valley Antiques

Imagine walking into a store that cleverly disguises itself as the farmhouse home of your dreams. There is nothing majestic, grand, or new about this coveted dream home. No, it's more along the lines of vintage-aged; welcoming and inviting like the arms of a kind, old grandmother; cozy like a flannel blanket you wrap yourself up in on cold nights to warm the body as much as the soul. This embrace is felt as you enter through the front door via the front porch of Chagrin Valley Antiques. It's a quaint, unassuming place that holds so much treasure a sheer glimpse of the place can make one's heart skip a beat.

Now that I've discovered for myself the wonders and magic this store of antiques, American folk art, and primitives holds, I can honestly say I am abashed at the shrugs I gave the place as I have passed it time and time again for years, always noticing the place, sometimes curious about it, but never stopping in for a looksie. What a mistake! Diana and Tom are the store's proprietors. Diana will more than likely greet you with her bubbly personality filled with spunk and a hint of a wild side from days gone by - but she's not telling. Immediately I can tell she's the kind of woman that never forgets a face. She represents the soul and personality of the place, and her husband, Tom, is, perhaps the quiet, unassuming glue that holds the place together. It's certainly a family affair and I think they make a great team.

OK, enough with the theatrical introductions, let's get on to the specifics of Chagrin Valley Antiques. If you love primitives, folk art, and antiques, you will be doing yourself a disservice if you don't go to this store now! Like, right now! Do not pass go, do not collect $200, go NOW! What's great about the place is they only sell Made in the USA! That's right, everything for sale is made right here, and right when we need it the most. Chagrin Valley Antiques is known for selling these gourds that are as individual as each human being breathing on Earth. The gourds are grown on a farm in Pennsylvania where they are picked, gutted, cleaned, dried, carved, and named - yes, each style of gourd has a name like George or Jack. These gourd guys are delightful and most come with a light attachment to really show off their carving. And, these gourds are seasonal, not just for Halloween. There are Uncle Sam gourds for Independence Day, Easter Bunny gourds, Christmas gourds - it's a year-round "gourd-geous" delight!

If you get a chance, treat yourself to your own feast for the eyes at Chagrin Valley Antiques. With each step the old, wood, wide-planked floors lead you to rooms awaiting to delight your senses. You never know which treasure will find a place into your home and heart.

Going Local: Big Fun Cleveland

"A cornucopia of delights, a cathedral of counter-culture, a warehouse of nerdabilia and nostalgia", Big Fun proclaims and I could not have said it better myself. One Saturday morning we packed up the kid and headed to the big city, Cleveland that is. Along the way we did, you know, the normal city things like checked-out a Cleveland city street turned New York demolished-street for the filming of the Avengers movie, ate the bestest, most freshest guacamole ever to be made in the city at 11:00 am (sorry for making you open early) with piping hot tortilla chips that have a tinge of cinnamon (if I'm not mistaken) at El Tango Taqueira. And even with a stroll through the West Side Market, we couldn't help but enjoy our time the most, meandering down memory lane getting back in touch with our childhood memories at a great toy shop called Big Fun Cleveland

Old is new, again.

You'll find those toys mom threw away or put in the garage sale at this wonderful shop! And to think, you can own it once again! Only now it's vintage and you'll just have to deal with sticker shock, but can you put a price on a memory?

Click on the pic!
Click on the pic!

I am absolutely in love with all the antique fixtures holding and displaying all the fun toys from the past. Every drawer you open holds a treasure of nostalgia just waiting to be discovered.

I opened a drawer and there was my old Star Wars Princess Leia action figure staring me right in the face. I wasn't sure if she was saying, "Take me home! We have found each other once again" or perhaps it was "You again? Get lost, I've gotten along fine on my own without you." I'll admit, she was the only female action figure in the entire bin?!?! (Do you see what the movie Toy Story has done to my imagination?)

Search and you shall find.

My son had a blast looking at the old Spiderman comic books. He even bought one for $1 - whew, got off easy! I hope you take the time to take the kiddos to Big Fun Cleveland! It's a great place to hang out and introduce the younglings to the toys of the past that influenced your present.

WARNING. WARNING. WARNING! Do not, I repeat, do not allow your children to wander through the store without your supervision. At all costs, do not meander to the far right back corner of the store. IT IS NOT FOR CHILDREN and their sign warning you of this is not at all big enough or bright enough to avoid marring innocent eyes of the young and truth be told, of the old, as well. Consider yourself warned. Everything else in the store was A-OK, G-rated.

Big Fun Cleveland is located at 11512 Clifton Blvd., Cleveland, OH, 44102. 216.631.4386
Their other location is located at 1814 Coventry Rd., Cleveland Heights, OH 44118. 216.371.4386

What was your favorite childhood toy?
